The following photographs are each examples of, or extrapolations on the Metabolist architectural movement which swept through Japan in the 1960s and early 1970s. The movement is a product of the country’s recovery from the second world war and defined by an energy and ambition that was unrivaled for its time. This is evident when looking at these unique structures in retrospect and helps to contextualize an otherwise bazar and out of place aesthetic in the generally functionalist and rational Japanese cityscape. These buildings are essentially relics of a past era, fully extant in the built environment, and combined with the Japanese expectation for urban renewal, they are in a state of uncertain danger in the turbulent climate of changing aesthetic taste.
